Programme highlight

BEAM Plus is a green building rating tool widely adopted in Hong Kong. Every year, there are about 150 projects participating in BEAM Plus, generating substantial assessment workload. The workload is also diversified as new tools, including revamped tool for existing buildings and new tool for neighbourhood, have been launched in recent years. In this talk, the speaker will share the latest development of BEAM Plus and talk about how to become BEAM Assessors, who are individuals accredited by Hong Kong Green Building Council, providing assessment service on a paid or volunteer basis. The service can be performed outside a person’s day-time job so that his/her career will not be affected. There are two routes to become BEAM Assessors, including a normal route and a veteran scheme. The latter is mainly targeted at retired persons.

Report

Martin SIU

Jointly organised by the CA, EV Divisions and the AMC, the captioned seminar was held on 20 February 2017.  Ir Dr Eddy Lau, Head of Green Labelling of the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), was the speaker.

BEAM Plus is a green building rating scheme operated by the HKGBC in conjunction with BEAM Society Ltd (BSL). Starting from 2011, going through BEAM Plus assessment has become one of the prerequisites for obtaining gross floor area concessions. Since then, the number of projects registered with BEAM Plus is on a rapid growth.  Last year, HKGBC launched a new tool under the BEAM Plus family – BEAM Plus Neighbourhood (ND), and issued a revised version of BEAM Plus Existing Buildings (EB). BEAM Plus ND is intended to be used at the master planning stage of building developments.  It puts a higher focus on the open spaces between buildings and impacts of a project on its neighbourhood.  The revised version of BEAM Plus EB provides a greater flexibility for participation as building owners can choose to obtain a rating in one or more aspects such as management, energy, water, etc.  There is also a recently launched BEAM Plus Bespoke procedure to enable developers to tailor-make the BEAM Plus assessment tool to their special buildings such as data centres, airport terminals and sewage treatment plant.

With increasing workload, it is important to have enough BEAM Assessors. They could be either part-time paid workers or volunteers in supporting the assessment work. HKGBC is responsible for carrying out recruitment and examination while BSL is responsible for assigning jobs to the assessors. Both practicing and retired engineers are welcome to join the BEAM Assessor workforce.

At the end of the seminar, Ir Dr Lau briefly talked about other contribution opportunity - the Green Building Faculty, followed by a question-and-answer session.
