Report

By Mr. Terry LAW

The Control, Automation & Instrumentation Division had organized a technical visit to MTR Hong Kong Station (HOK) in the morning of 7 Dec 2013 (Sat). There were total 20 participants attended the visit.

We were pleased to have Mr. Ringo Ma, the Shift Station Master of the Hong Kong Station, to give us a brief introduction of MTR and railway operations. Since Hong Kong Station is situated in the heart of the city connecting the Hong Kong International Airport and the Central business district, the station was designed to offer many outstanding facilities, such as, the In-town Check-in system. Participants visited the restricted Baggage Handling Area (Note: photo taking was not allowed.) and were impressed by the sophisticated baggage transportation system, which allows passengers to check in as early as one day in advance or as late as 90 minutes before departure. There must be lots of intelligence behind the underlying control system to ensure that all items are being transported safely and securely.

As one of the key interchange stations in MTR, participants also visited the core of the Hong Kong station - Station Control Room. The Shift Station Master introduced frequently used control systems, such as, the Environmental Control System (ECS) to control heaters, chillers and fans as well as the Automatic Train Control System to control junctions and points. Participants were interested in the daily station operations and raised many interesting questions for discussion: How does the station coordinate train movement with the Operations Control Centre? Which system(s) should be activated in case of emergency? How does the station manage the different In-town Check-in close-out time for individual airlines?

Finally, the visit ended with a Q&A session and the HKIE CAD organizing committee took the opportunity to thank MTR Society Link for the arrangement on the technical visit.
