Technical Seminar: Smart-to-charge for EVs, and the Future

Program Highlights

In Hong Kong, electric vehicles (EVs) are getting more and more popular. By the end of November 2017, there were more than 11,000 EVs. However, there are insufficient charging facilities serving the users. The small output charging current from standard chargers cannot meet the capacity of modern EVs. These two problems can be solved by installing more and higher power charging points. However, this causes two technical problems: over-design issue and insufficiency of supply currents.

Launched in April 2017, a “Smart-to-Charge” system has started operating for AA’s fleet of EVs in the Airport. With the system, the problem arising from large-scale deployment of EV charging infrastructure could be easily solved, the overall utilization rate would be enhanced and the installation cost would be reduced. In the presentation, the speakers will introduce the employment of load management system concept to the “Smart-to-charge” system which was jointly developed by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Airport Authority Hong Kong.
