Technical seminar on Air Movement for Energy-Efficient Comfort in Conditioned Spaces

Programme highlights

This seminar will help participants learn about HVAC design strategy that pairs elevated air speeds with traditional air conditioning in order to achieve energy savings. The presentation will describe the additional design benefits from minimizing ductwork, lowering HVAC costs, improving ventilation rates and reducing condensation, as well as explain significant energy savings potential from de-stratifying a large open space. The speaker will also share some case application of using fans to achieve thermal comfort and energy efficient.

Speaker

Mr. Andy Chou is a US certified attorney and has worked in the technology sector for several Fortune 500 companies. He is currently the managing director of Big Ass Fans Hong Kong Limited and is responsible for all East Asia markets including Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. Andy has delivered presentations on the subject of air movement and energy-efficiency to many organization like AIAHK and HKGBC.

In line with Energy Saving Plan for Hong Kong's Built Environment set by the Environmental Bureau (HKSAR), this technical seminar co-organized by HKIE-CAD, EVD, AMC, and CIAT-HKC and held on 19 February at HKIE headquarter, aimed at sharing with the public an innovative design of indoor ventilation system in maximizing building energy efficiency, thermal comfort and cost saving. Based on specific guidelines of ASHRAE 55 (Thermal Environmental Condition for Human Occupancy), the speaker, Mr. Andy Chou, Managing Director of Big Ass Fans Hong Kong Limited, described the combination of indoor environmental and personal factors (air and radiant temperatures, air speed velocity, humidity, clothing insulation, metabolic rate) that optimize thermal comfort; and addressed the effectiveness of incorporating air movement in building plans as part of an integrated design strategy. 

ASHRAE 55 has highlighted the impact of elevated air speed on thermal comfort and guided innovative designs for air movement as an integral part of occupant comfort and energy conservation over recent years. In accordance with such innovation and based on the Center for the Built Environmental Thermal Comfort Modeling System, Mr. Chou brilliantly shared with the participants the basis of thermal comfort prediction (predicted percentage of dissatisfied, predicted mean vote and operative temperature within the comfort zone); explained the use of elevated air speed for efficient air distribution, perceived cooling and energy savings within air conditioned spaces; and provided insights into design benefits of minimizing ductwork, improving ventilation rates and reducing condensation in terms of comfortable indoor air quality, material cost reduction, energy saving potential from large space de-stratification, lowering HVAC costs, and contribution to green building standards.

As a result of application to specific case studies, such design enhanced HVAC efficiency with 50% and 83% energy saving respectively in Berea College in Korea and Bullitt Center in Seattle (Office Building). It also enabled pairing HVLS fans for natural ventilation and thermal comfort in Zero Carbon Building in Hong Kong and increasing guest comfort in W Bali Building (Seminyak Retreat and Spa) in Indonesia.
