In Hong Kong, there are over 6,500km of public drainage and sewerage laid underground, someof them laid over 40 years. There is a big challenge to maintain good service and structuralconditions to serve over 7.5 million people on a daily basis and also be capable of “Once in twohundred years” rainfall. Pipe Condition Assessment (PCA) becomes one of the critical elementsfor these underground infrastructures.
There are a lot of different methods to assess the pipe in a non-destructive approach such as CCTV inspection, Laser scanning, and Unmanned Ariel Vehicle (UAV) inspection. When adopting different sophisticated equipment, sets of standards by professionals, for instance, members of the Hong Kong Institute of Utility Specialists (HKIUS), are followed. By incorporating all the equipment, we can provide good solutions to deal with different circumstances including some unexpected situations.
Mr. Zico Kwok joined the underground utility survey field in 1995 and was involved in the first
pilot contract for the Slope Leakage Investigation Contract of the Housing Authority. During the last 30 years in the underground detection industry, he has undertaken different types of training both locally and overseas by many experienced Engineers from the field. He was a part-time Visiting Lecturer for the Location of Underground Electricity Cable Course under SPEED of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 2002-2003 He has been an Honorary Life Member of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Foundation since 2014. He was a member of the advisory committee for the Department of Land Surveying & Geo-informatics of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University during 2015-2017. Hs was the Past President of The Hong Kong Institute of Utility Specialists (HKIUS) from 2011 to 2013 and is a Fellow member of HKIUS currently. He has been a member of the Institute of Measurement and Control since 2023. He managed different major contracts related to utilities which involved the survey area of over 2,000,000 sq.m.
