Programme Highlights
Additive Manufacturing (AM), i.e., 3D printing, has been increasingly applied in many engineering disciplines, including aerospace, bioengineering and automotive. This digital fabrication technology has been explored in the construction industry in recent years as well. Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is widely recognised to be the most suitable AM technique for construction applications due to its relatively high deposition rate, large build volume and low cost. However, the structures fabricated by WAAM technique are relatively new to engineers and researchers. This situation restricts the use of such technique in construction sector. In this seminar, the recent investigations on the structural performance of WAAM high performance steel will be summarized and presented, including the material properties, structural member, and icon structures.

Ir Dr Yancheng CAI Affiliation: Department of Construction and Quality Management, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) Ir Dr Yancheng CAI is an assistant professor and the leader of several programmes at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU). He obtained his doctoral degree in structural engineering from The University of Hong Kong in 2013. Before joining HKMU, he worked in the consultant company and universities for the practice and research in structural engineering during 2014-2022. He is a Chartered Engineer, and holds the Fellow of Institution of Civil Engineers, Member of Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Member of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Dr Cai’s research focuses on the behaviour and design of high-performance steel (including stainless steel and high strength steel) structures at room and elevated temperatures. His specialties include the combination of experimental design, numerical modelling and theoretical analysis in the investigation, stability and connection details of high-performance steel structures and steel modular systems. Dr. Cai received the Grand Prize of the HKIE Innovation Awards for Young Members in 2018 and, the “Commendation Merit - R&D Award by Joint Structural Division of Structural Division of HKIE and the IStructE in 2017.
